A Unitarian/Universalist Overview

By Hal Mansfield

The local Unitarian/Universalist Congregation is a liberal religious community that affirms and encourages the search for personal fulfillment. It is a vibrant, growing, socially aware group of concerned citizens, many with distinguished careers in diverse fields.

The congregation meets every Sunday at its campus at the Amado Territorial Ranch at 10:00 a.m. The services include traditional sermons three times a month and educational and social issue forums, otherwise. The services are augmented by the splendid Santa Rita Choral with instrumental accompaniment.

The Unitarian and Universalist churches represent some of the oldest and most distinguished religious institutions in the United States. UU churches have provided a bedrock for religious expression from before this nation was founded to the present day. Five US Presidents were UUs: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, Millard Fillmore and William Howard Taft. Other notable UUs include: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Paul Revere, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Daniel Webster, Alexander Graham Bell, Clara Barton, Louisa May Alcott, Julia Ward Howe, John Dewey, Susan B. Anthony, Carl Sandberg, Buckminster Fuller, N. C. Wyeth, Frank Lloyd Wright and Linus Pauling.

The local Congregation has contributed, on a weekly basis and for many years, one half of each week's offerings to local and regional causes, including The Green Valley and Amado Food Banks, Friends in Deed, Valley Assistance Services, Samaritans and many other key social network organizations. Over the years, this has added up to many thousands of dollars.

Members of the local congregation, individually, belong to virtually every socially positive cause in this area. The majority of UUs, locally and around the world, exemplify spiritual and religious beliefs in the best and deepest senses of those terms. The Seven Unitarian/Universalist Principles are: 1) The inherent worth and dignity of every person. 2) Justice, equity and compassion in human relations. 3) Acceptance of one another and encouragement of spiritual growth in our congregation. 4) A free and responsible search for truth and meaning. 5) The rights of conscience and the use of the democratic process withing our congregations and in society at large. 6) The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all. 7) Respect for the interdependent web of existence of which we are a part. What reasonable individual could argue with these basic principles? Few, if any, I think.

The Unitarian/Universality Congregation serves Amado, Arivaca, Carmen, Green Valley, Nogales, Rio Rico, Sahuarita, Tumacacori, specifically, and the Santa Cruz Valley and Southern Arizona, generally.

UUs are accepting of both diversity and inclusivity, along with traditional, main-stream religious, moral, ethical orientations and life-styles.
