Editor:

Several people have asked me why I have written such angry letters about President Bush and the Congress. My reason is simple: The American people have been terribly betrayed by the very people we have elected to server our interests.

There is an old saying about liars, damn liars and statisticians. I think we should change that to liars, damn liars and politicians. The middle-class have long borne more than their fair share of the cost of running our republic. However, that burden was magnified many time over in the last 11 years.

Reagan, Bush, and the Congress, for a very complex configuration of reasons savaged the middle-class with a series of changes in the tax laws and other laws and in government rules and regulations--changes in what Bartlett and Steele in their book "American: What Went Wrong" call the 'rule book.'

These changes permitted the dishonest and the greedy to accelerate the corporate merger mania that led to massive corporate debt, to unprecedented bankruptcies and to the junk bond fiascoes and other excesses that then led tot the savings and loan crisis, with all of its ramifications. The bank scandal, which is now under the carpet, will emerge as soon as the election is over.

Question: Who really paid for all of this insider criminal and greed motivated behavior? Answer: If you said the American middle-class tax payer and the National debt, you were right on the money.

Question: Who is directly responsible for the tremendous rise in the criminal and greed motivated activities of the last 11 years? If you answered Reagan, Bush and the Congress, you are right on target, once more.

Am I angry? You bet I am. Am I going to do something about it? You bet I am. First, I am going to continue to write letters to the editor detailing just how these excesses were spawned in the White House and in the Congress. Next, I am going to work to see that George Bush becomes a one-term president. And, I am going to try as best I can to see that almost every member of Congress who has the gall to run for re-election is defeated, even if they are trying to leave the mess in the House of Representatives behind and join the other "Slick Willies" in the Senate.

I wish every middle-class American would wake, get mad, and join me in getting those who are not registered to vote, registered. And to get those who have not been active, active. And to get those who have been in office in Washington, out of office.

The American voter bears the ultimate blame for everything bad that has happened. The wonderful thing about our country is the simple way that the wrong can begin to be put right. It begins with understanding, it progresses through determination. It ends with VTRO. Come on folks, let's band together to Vote The Rascals Out!!!

Sincerely,

Hal Mansfield
